Recognizing that litigation is only one part of a strategy for achieving criminal justice reform, the Southern Center for Human Rights facilitated the formation of Georgians for Equal Justice (GEJ), a public policy citizen advocacy coalition, in January 1999. GEJ has a Steering Committee of nine people, and is an active coalition of over 130 individuals and organizations, including non-profit organizations, churches that work with prisoners and their families, law offices, concerned citizens, activists, family members of prisoners, and representatives of victim advocacy groups. GEJ focuses on policy-level change at the state and local levels, and does not engage in advocacy for particular individuals in the criminal justice system. Below is GEJ's Mission Statement, current focus areas, description of our recent advocacy successes, and our guiding philosophies.
