Center Client Acquitted of Murder in Phenix City, Alabama

The Center responded to pleas for help from Albert Joe Ryans, who had been in an Alabama jail for two years facing capital murder charges and had seen his court-appointed lawyer only once for a few minutes. Christopher Adams, capital resource counsel for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers based at the Center, took responsibility for representing Ryans, persuaded the state not to seek the death penalty, and, at a trial in December 2002, Ryans was acquitted.
